Timber v uPVC: The benefits of using Timber instead
Published Tuesday 25th July, 2017
A key decision you must make when developing your dream home is what material to use for your windows and doors. They’re the entry points of your home, the entryway for fresh air and the passage of natural light – so it’s a big decision.
The two main options people tend to end up with are timber or PVC. So, which one should you go for?
Better for the environment
The best thing about timber is its fantastic environmental impact. Not only does using timber ensure you’re emitting less Co2 gasses, but it’s also a carbon negative and is known to be the most resourceful way to build! By using timber for your windows and doors, your home is doing that little bit more for the planet. Not bad, eh?
PVC unfortunately doesn’t have any environmental benefits when used as part of a new build, and the creation of PVC involves a lot of toxic chemicals which is incredibly damaging to the atmosphere.
An amazing thing about timber is its long-lasting attributes. If you treat your timber well it could last up to 60 years, as opposed to PVC which normally only has a shelf-life of up to 30 years. This will save you a lot of time and effort in the later years of your home when your timber window frames and door are still as strong and beautiful as ever.
Variety of styles and finishes
For something so solid, the flexibility of timber is truly inspiring. Timber comes in such a wide variety of styles, shades and finishes that you can have any look you desire. From deep mahoganies to light, strong oaks, there’s a look for everyone. You can additionally use a multitude of different varnishes, paints and coatings to finish off your look.
As a plastic, PVC can be moulded into different shapes and looks, however you’ll never be able to shake the plastic look. For such an important part of your home, we’d suggest going au naturel with some beautiful timber.
And that’s it!
We hope you’ve learnt a little bit more about the difference between timber and PVC. Your windows and doors are a key part of your home’s design and it’s vital that you choose the right material for them – one you’ll love for as long as you’re in your home.
