The air is crisp, the afternoons are slightly colder and the sun is still shining bright – Autumn has officially arrived.

Now, the heat may have dropped, but the opportunity to take part in loads of fun, autumnal woodworking projects is still as high as ever.

In this blog, we’ll be taking a look at three of the best seasonal projects you could be getting up to in your spare time.

Park bench

There’s something about the fresh, cooler air in the latter months of the year that make going outside that little bit more appealing. Whether you just want to sit out in the garden with a cup of tea or go and take in the sights at your local park, you’ll find a park bench remains a firm favourite this time of the year.

All you need is:

  • Roughly 8 2x4s
  • A mechanical saw
  • Screws
  • An electric drill
  • Sandpaper
  • Varnish

To help you along in the process, we thought we’d give you this “how to” video to give you a practical look at how to build your bench.

It’s important to remember that your park bench will be at risk of weathering, so once it’s sanded, varnish it thoroughly to keep it in great condition.

Now, let’s see how we build this bench:

DIY wardrobe

Perhaps you’re on the other side of the scale, in which you much prefer staying indoors when the weather gets colder? If so, a great woodworking task to occupy yourself with would be a DIY wardrobe. The summer clothes have officially been put away and you need more space for your bigger, warmer, and all round more comfortable autumn and winter clothes.

So, what’s the best way to tackle a wardrobe build? Let’s take a look:

  • Cut your shelves to the exact width and size you want them to be
  • Attach two end panels to your shelves using 34mm x 34mm screws and an electric drill. Only one end panel is needed if you’re fixing your wardrobe against a wall
  • Install sliding door stacks by measuring the lengths carefully and screwing the top track to the ceiling and bottom track to the floor
  • Cut your doors to size and fit them. Assuming that all your measurements are sound, your doors will simply slip into place along the sliding door tracks
  • Hey presto, you have a brand new wardrobe!

Christmas card holder

Want to get a head start on your Christmas planning? With just 6 weeks to go until we’re tucking into our Christmas turkey, a fantastic way to decorate your home whilst keeping your masses of Christmas cards organised is this really cool DIY Christmas Card Holder.

Cut small timber boards into graduated lengths (as seen in the image below), paint them in seasonal colours and nail them to a centre post to create a skeleton of a tree.

Hot-glue mini clothespins to the branches and then peg your cards and photos to them – beautiful, festive and a great space-saver!
