Chain of Custody
Chain of Custody is defined as ‘the path taken by raw materials, processed materials and finished products from the forest to the consumer including each stage of transformation, manufacturing, storage and transport where progress to the next stage involves change of ownership of the materials or products.’ Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®)
It provides customers’ assurances that wood and wood-based products come from responsibly managed forests and, for the wood processing industry, it can improve efficiency and production systems through enhanced traceability and accounting. For the certification to be awarded all stages of the process must have been inspected and certified. Only if all stages of the chain are certified can the end product carry the certification logo. Currently the two main Chain of Custody certifications are provided by the FSC® and the PEFC™.
Both are recognised throughout the timber industry and beyond and they provide added value to products, giving them a verifiable social and environmental quality. They also demonstrate that the supplier takes environmental concerns seriously.
At International Timber we work hard to ensure our timber is certified Chain of Custody timber, either through the FSC® or PEFC™. By working closely with our suppliers as well as certification bodies we have built up a reliable supply of legal and sustainable timber. All of our sites hold Chain of Custody certification
