Restoring the streets of Manchester with Accoya

Restoring the streets of Manchester with Accoya

Background

Working with a local joinery company, International Timber supplied Accoya wood for use in ultra-modern benches that were to be situated in the bustling Piccadilly Gardens area of Manchester city centre.

Due to the site of the project being open to the elements 365 days a year – the materials had to be highly water-resistant, in addition to being tough enough to cope with the wear and tear of constant usage.

The Product

More than 80 years’ research and development have gone into making Accoya the most durable product currently available on the market. Combining cutting-edge technology with the tried and tested process of acetylation – this high-performance wood made the ideal choice for these fixtures, which would face a year-round onslaught from the elements.

The unique treatment process that goes into making Accoya makes it highly resistant to moisture, mould, fungi, UV exposure and pretty much anything else the inclement Manchester climate can throw at it.

Accoya also boasts fantastic environmental credentials. Made from certified wood and treated with non-toxic chemicals – the company behind the product prides itself on its carbon-negative status and commitment to renewable energy.

The Project

Following a competitive tender process, our joinery partners were selected by Manchester City Council to machine, stain and install the benches, which now take pride of place in the newly-refurbished Piccadilly Gardens.
