Case Study
The Haven Boathouse at Horning in Norfolk was built to provide its occupiers with a comfortable and sustainable home. LSI Architects was challenged to design a dwelling that was sustainable while also maintaining a graceful aesthetic that would complement and enhance the setting, as well as being a pleasant place to live.
Due to the building being surrounded by water on three sides, the chosen materials needed to be highly water resistant due to the likelihood of flooding. International Timber was approached to supply the timber for the project and recommended Accoya® modified timber (created by Accsys Technologies) for all of the external cladding and decking due to its durability and resistance to decay.
Accoya® wood is the result of over 80 years research and development. Combining the proven modification technique of acetylation with cutting-edge proprietary technology, this high performance wood is an excellent choice for demanding outdoor applications such as windows and doors as well as structures that are permanently exposed to water such as bridges and boats.
It also has superior resistance to UV exposure, is more stable that other joinery timber and has a minimum 60 year life expectancy which has been confirmed by the Building Research Establishment (BRE) and TRADA.
The exceptional performance of Accoya® was recognised at the Sustain Magazine Awards when it was announced as the winner of the Technology category. The Haven Project was also shortlisted as a finalist in the Construction category.
